Top 10 of 2004:

1. The Girl Next Door
2. The Aviator
3. Garden State
4. The Passion of the Christ
5. Sideways
6. The Terminal
7. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
8. I Heart Huckabees
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
10. Meet the Fockers

I just wanted to comment on this, I watched The Girl Next Door last year, and despite being a puerile film in many regards, that was understandably lambasted by a few critics, I actually think it succeeded in squaring the sexual jealousy of teenagers by having the object of affections as an adult actress.

A crude use of a familiar trope, but more honest than the bulk of teen romances out there.

... because I'm a wild animal

You don't empathise with A Serious Man because you're not yet a married square with the threat of being rubbed out of life hanging over you.

Yeah you're probably right, marriage is a LONG way off for me.

Still I can say the acting in the film did little to impress me.

That's an odd thing to say, Vex.

The acting is spot on for the tone of the film. Larry is portrayed brilliantly as an academically smart, yet basically lost in a world he give up trying to actually understand long ago.

What exactly could have made it better?

It's not an "odd" thing to say, acting is subjective, and I simply didn't think the acting in the film was that great.

I think being a married square or whatever is probably helpful for getting A Serious Man, but it's still a solid watch for anyone who's ever been on the rotten side of a random, indifferent universe.

That's pretty much how I related to it. It made my Top 10 of 2009 but I haven't watched it again since. I'll have to re-visit sometime.
